The World's Largest Statue of a Full Human

Although a taller statue of a highly stylised and anatomically unrealistic Buddha now stands near Tokyo, Motherland remains the largest depiction of a human figure ever made. At 52 metres (170 feet) in height from her heels to the top of her head, Motherland is much taller than her more famous sister in New York, the Statue of Liberty, who stands a “mere” 33.8 metres (111 feet) tall.

The tip of Motherland’s 20-metre-long sword reaches to an incredible 85 metres (278 feet) above her heels, which makes it 38.5 metres (126 feet) taller than Liberty’s torch.

Creating Motherland was a stunning engineering feat. Held in place by gravity alone, she’s a single block of reinforced concrete over a steel framework. She’s so heavy—5,500 tons of concrete over 2,400 tons of steel—that she needs a 16-metre (52 feet)-deep sub-surface foundation.

These mammoth figures may mean little to some readers, so a few simple comparisons may help. From heels to hair Motherland is the height of a 17-story building. Her billowing scarf (at 250 tons) alone weighs the combined weight of eight Soviet T-34 tanks. Her mighty stainless-steel sword (14 tons) by itself weighs the same as 16 Volkswagen beetle cars!
